During the days of big government, taxes were far higher than they are now and there wasn't the huge wage spread between labor (who made more than they do now) and management. This kept the need for borrowing down.

If you told the Founding Fathers we have a tax structure that forces you to pay up to 35 percent on money earned by farming or making steel, but only 15 percent on the profit from selling a piece of paper with the name of a company printed on it, and that our richest citizens earn all their money by selling those papers, they would be appalled. But that's how America is now.
