My wife watched her father die from esophogeal cancer because he couldn't afford the treatments. Got sick without insurance. Ran up $150K in debt on credit cards paying for Chemo, then when he ran out of credit, they referred him to hospice. He didn't have the heart to tell anyone he was paying with credit cards, so he ruined my mother in law financially when he passed. She filed bankruptcy, but made a terrible choice to sell her home before she was clear of the 2 year waiting period after bankruptcy, so the court came and took all the proceeds at closing and her entire life savings went poof.

He was getting better, to this day I believe he would have beaten it if he had more money or had health insurance.

And that's an extreme case. Much mjuch more common is just people not getting preventative care that could have saved theirn lives because they don't have insurance.
