7. I recall having to do that with a return there months ago.

It was for a larger item, though. I assumed it was a loss prevention measure. They wouldn't want people buying items and then stealing one of the same item to return it with the receipt. If the same person is constantly returning large ticket item, that could indicate theft. Doing it for $12 does seem a little silly.
