(33,688 posts)In a democratic republic such as the US, the people should have control over the goverment. It is, or was, before the 1% essentially bought the government, accountable to the populace. Private power is accountable to no one. The only countervailing power to vast accumulations of private wealth and privilege is a government which genuinely represents all the people, not merely the wealthiest.
