(19,964 posts)Over 100,000 Southern white men (mostly from the Appalachians) fought to preserve the Union, plus over 100,000 Southern ex-slaves. I think the fact that their sacrifice and history has been largley ignored is a damned shame. Southern "heritage" doesn't belong solely to white men who fought for the Confederacy. South Carolina was the only state not to raise at least one regiment for the Union Army.
