Turkish delegation arrives in Gaza to investigate setting up field hospital, shipping container housing [View all]

From CNN’s Scott McLean and Isil Sariyuce in Istanbul

A technical committee from Turkey has arrived on the ground in Gaza with the aim of setting up a field hospital as soon as possible, according to Turkish diplomatic sources. The hospital aims to treat tens of thousands of injured civilians, according to state-run news agency Anadolu.

The team will "carry out the feasibility studies of the field hospital planned to be established in Gaza by Turkey," and it arrived in Gaza via Egypt, according to a statement from diplomatic sources. “Depending on the findings of our committee, we plan to put the hospital into operation as soon as possible.”

Turkey is also planning to set up housing made of shipping containers for displaced people in Gaza, Anadolu further reported. The United Nations has estimated that about 1.7 million people – nearly 80% of the population – has been displaced by the war.

Turkish media previously reported that the materials and medical supplies for the field hospital were sent by ship to Egypt.
