elected since LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964. Appealing to the worst fears and lowest instincts is an American political tradition that still has legs. I have relatives who won't vote for the President because they perceive people with a different skin tone as inferior. I can't engage in any conversation with them that's beyond small talk.
