I am a Christian, and I am a very flawed person, but I don't believe that people are inherently evil. I believe that humanity is a work in progress, and we all need to work to improve ourselves.

I find it interesting that your church felt that way about baptism. Jesus was without sin, and yet He presented himself to be baptized by John. To me, baptism is a commitment to try to live the best life we can under Christian principles, a commitment made either by ourselves or by our parents to raise us in those principles.
