Occupy Movement Intensifying Its Legislative Focus -- Rally Tuesday Outside Capitol [View all]

More than 30 Occupy groups and 10,000 Facebook users are backing Tuesday’s Occupy Congress rally outside the Capitol, and they represent a growing faction within the liberal movement that says the path to reining in Wall Street runs through Capitol Hill.

“Congress is the place that we should focus,” said Natalia Abrams, a California-based activist. “I don’t think we’re ever going to get Wall Street to control its greed, but maybe we can get Congress to control their greed for them.”

Earlier this month, Occupy Wall Street passed a resolution supporting a constitutional amendment that states, “Corporations are not people, and money is not speech.” It marked a big step for the movement, which has a decentralized structure that has made reaching consensus difficult.

Amending the Constitution may be ambitious, but the goal gives Occupiers something concrete to rally around after the winter lull that followed their evictions from Zuccotti Park and other camps nationwide.

Occupiers are setting up meetings with lawmakers and their staff to push for their set of legislative priorities — the kind of lobbying typical of established causes and interest groups.

”We’re helping people from all over the country set up meetings with their representatives if they want to go that route,” Caty McClure of Occupy D.C. told POLITICO.

The push among some members of the group to work within the establishment political system is a significant transition for the loosely-affiliated entities that have prided themselves on their anarchist roots.

Occupiers — who at times have been criticized for their lack of concrete policy positions while they railed against corporate greed and economic inequality — are also beginning to get more vocal on specific legislative goals. In Washington, they have begun to take positions on as wide ranging issues as the National Defense Authorization Act and the potential threat of online piracy legislation.

from OccupyDC: http://occupydc.org/occupy-movement-converges-on-capitol-for-occupy-congress/

Occupy Congress will take place on January 17, 2012, beginning at 9 a.m. at the West Front Lawn of the United States Capitol. Occupy Congress is expected to be one of the largest rallies of the Occupy movement to date and will draw attention to the undue influence of the richest 1 percent on America’s political system.

Occupy DC is coordinating with members of the Occupy movement from across the globe for this day of action. Occupiers from Maine to California will converge on the U.S. Capitol for visits to their elected officials, topical teach-ins, a General Assembly on the steps of power and a march leaving from the Capitol at 6:00 PM.

Activists who cannot join us will occupy Congress’ phone lines and email inboxes, making sure their representatives hear their voices.
