(6,926 posts)29. i know my ancestor did not own slaves, they were poor for many years.
I suspect he joined for the hope of food and clothing. Doubt he was even a landowner. He was my father's family. My mother's family owned land and had more money. My mother's brother made an effort to find an ancestor who did not buy his way out of joining the CSA, but he never found one. It was a source of entertainment to some of us. We are from Gwinnett County, GA.
