5. The point of excerpts is to help the reader, not to cause them cognitive dissonance

Create cognitive dissonance and most people (wisely) will punt. Poor excerpts discourage following it up. Worse, they misrepresent the journalists and the source.

I presume you seek to write for your readers' benefit.
