in the 90s, and it did bring down crime. But the aftereffects were terrible and led to mass incarceration - even Bill Clinton (and Biden) admits this.

Eric Adams has the correct approach, where you come down on truly violent (especially gang) crime, while working to prevent people who simply have problems (mental, drugs, poverty etc) from getting caught up in the system.

Reimagining the police is what we need; much of what they do can and should be done by social workers and other professionals who actually are trained to handle such situations.
