He doesn't care about being painted a villain in history. He's going to die rich and important in his circles, and that's what's important to him.

Not his constituents, not the world his grandchildren will live in (because they can always buy their way into comfort.like he can), not anything outside of his personal world.

He doesn't "see" or care about anything he isn't interested in or doesn't advantage him.
Heck, my cats have more awareness of the entirety of their environment than he does.
