9. I never clearly thought of it like that but it makes a lot of sense.

When everything is boiled down to black/white, winner/losers, good/evil, lead/follow, etc., it's then a zero sum game. With only two outcomes available, "thinking" becomes easy and takes far less effort — no nuance necessary — when the opposite of that is needed in this increasingly complex world.

Now for the autocrats, corporations, MSM and others doing the "boiling down", they have a powerful leg-up if they can convince enough folks that theirs is the path to follow, which is where we seem to be today: "no need to think you brave Patriots because we will and are doing it for you."
