The period in history that I like to study is WW2 and I have leaned the same issues we see today where around back then too. We often like to see things like Lend Lease and the total mobilization of the US economy as things that all Americans supported. But in reality, Republicans opposed FDR at every turn and rarely voted in large numbers for most of his proposals with Republican leaning news papers screaming about the Democrats being communists.
