(51,367 posts)7. In the 1960s Ford and GM still both made good cars that competed with foreign cars.
Then came the American automotive dark ages, the 1970s, when US car makers made absolute shit. And they never recovered.

On the other hand, they have been a leader in hybrids with better gas mileage

Toyota have sold fuel efficient vehicles, while GM, Ford, Ram/Jeep have sold pickups, big SUVs

The GM philosophy was that buyers should drive 3 years and then trade for a new one.
