It is the fastest and is also a means to stay with the current fashions. If such is important to you.

Unfortunately, it is also a bit of an art.

I never practiced it myself. Watching her I did pick up the majority of the trick is to buy the item sized with alteration in mind and then she'd completely remove the side seams and re-create them to conform to the measurements required.

She was always making me a new jacket. I have very broad shoulders and she would bring in the waist. They were often 'stolen' by friends. Because, off the shelf, most jackets are cylindrical at best. If they fit the top so you can move they hang like tents on the bottom. The cold cold wind would blow up in there.

Length is an easy hem and I have done that for myself.
