When I was 16, I got my full California driver's license. No restrictions - except from my parents. They had lots of restrictions. I couldn't drive more than 10 miles away from home. I couldn't drive after midnight. I could only have a passenger in the car on a date. No cruising with my friends. No tickets or I lost my driving privileges. I had to wash the car once a week. I had to pay for all gas I used.

My steady date's parents also had restrictions. No parking in dark places with their daughter, who had to be home by 11 PM on weekends, and was not to be returned to her house with her sweater inside out. That last restriction I learned about too late, in a stern lecture from her mother, who had a hard time not laughing as she lectured me.

The car? My parents' 1959 Plymouth Savoy, with a 6-cylinder engine and a two-speed automatic transmission. "The Boat." 0-60 in about 45 seconds.
