5. I think this person was probably a novice skier

Luckily they did the right thing using the backpack for distraction. I cant imagine how a bear would even come close to catch up with me going downhill.
Now that I think of it, it could also have been a staff member purposely going slowly to keep the bear in tow and move it away from people in more populated ski slopes.

In my twenties I used to work the slopes and in the evening we would go down scanning the slopes for people prior to closing. We would not use batons and turn more or less like that in order to scan the whole area systematically. That was in France and there was no bear to worry about in that area..
