No, they took them seriously.
Compromise after compromise, they took them seriously. The runaway slave act, the Missouri compromise, bleeding Kansas.* Every president during those years southerner, had sympathies toward the south, or owned slaves. The south didn't get their way in 1860, and acted like children. And they've continued to do it for 200 years now. Now they do it through a surrogate, the Republican party.
