Conservative ideology is the direct descendent of Royalist sentiment. The founders of the conservative thought process were all defenders of Monarchy. As monarchy as a direct governing structure was replaced, they had to pick a new method of establishing "divine right". They chose wealth as their new marker of worthiness, but they never abandoned the idea that people were inherently unequal and that right to "rule" or govern is not derived by the people, but by virtue of the rulers.

This is why Republicans do not seem to be bothered with the idea of democracy. Democracy is not a factor in their attribution of the right to govern. They are steeped in the idea that the "right kind of people" have basically a god ordained authority to rule. Given that the authority is beyond that of people, especially the rabble; rules and rule breaking, hypocrisy, and general disdain for the voices of others is not something that bothers them.
