18. I believe he has more to fear from Putin then just deserting him.

He knows what Putin's henchmen are capable of doing with someone who Putin no longer needs. He'll be suspicious of every hamberder he puts in his mouth (or tea he drinks). Living under the stresses he will have of all this fear may cause him to stroke out sooner rather than later.
