Around here, libraries regularly hold book sales, clearing out extra copies of formerly-hot titles for which they bought many copies initially. Those books, CDs, DVDs, etc. all come with the library's barcode stickers and other stamps, and they're still totally legitimate.

It would be hard to imagine a library discarding a first edition of that volume, but it's not unheard-of.
