1. Now I get it

Jared was put in charge to end the Israel-Palestine problem.

We just assumed that meant to come to a peaceful resolution like every other world leader in the last 70 years.

Turns out the goal was just to declare victory and move on with the Israelis taking what they wanted.

I guess considering whether Jared failed depends on what the goals were all along.

I would say we were back to square one except that I think we have regressed farther than that.
