VP Pence constantly uses the phrase "The American People." [View all]
It's a Republican catch-phrase that means "the people in America who vote for us." It doesn't refer to all of the people in this country. It doesn't refer to anyone who votes for Democrats, for example. It doesn't mean Americans who are immigrants, or Americans with brown skin. It doesn't mean Americans who speak English as a second language or who haven't learned English yet at all. It doesn't mean Native Americans, either. It doesn't mean Americans who follow any religion other than conservative Christianity. It doesn't mean Americans who do not follow any religion at all.
It means Republicans. "The American People" Pence is referring to are the 30% or so who will always vote for Trump or others like him. That's who "The American People" are to Mike Pence. That's what Mike Pence and other Republicans who use that phrase over and over again mean by it. They aren't talking about you or me or our neighbors. They're talking about a minority of people in America.
They say it again and again, because they want those American people to be the only American people.
