The cashier has to pull out a separate card reader for the EBT card. (If it's Wally's, you have to pay with two separate cards, if you get non-food items.) People can tell...
That being said: for health reasons, I decided to go Vegan (six months ago). I didn't get assistance until AFTER I made that decision. You should hear the sarcasm I get from friends and family about being Vegan while I'm getting assistance! You would think I'm buying steak and caviar. I've been told that it's "too expensive" to eat as a Vegan, and my roommate's mother scoured the internet to find articles that assert that veganism is as likely as consumption of animal products to cause stroke and heart disease. I'm now telling these naysayers to watch "Forks Over Knives" to understand my Veganism.
I can assure everyone who doubts that people in line can 'see' that you're using an EBT card: I get condescending looks all the time. I will certainly remember this lady's response, should anyone say anything derisive or judgmental.
