Two points - first about the "more excited" point that you make. The second about the bigger picture.
Point one:
I don't think they are excited about the horrific acts, but that instead they buy into the emphatic denials that cast opponents as the most evil (media, democrats, deepstate) people ever.
For those who are immersed in the rw media - or are subject to the "faith based" indoctrination (that is from the pulpit merging the pro trump/gop message with one of sanctioned by god) - they read these things as "verification"of their beliefs. Not from the incidents, but from the propaganda responses.
Point two:
Do know that there are many who do not pay that much attention to the news (the story, or the propaganda response) - who, over time, get the overall sense that things are really wrong. Think of the trump voters as a tapestry - and for 2 years - there has been fraying on the edges = less support. Those are the voters that are not in the above described group(s). Given the tiny margins for trump in 2016 - that margin of they fraying edges of his "coalition" is significant. If he had one by a landslide, the entrenched nature of a large chunk of his supporters should be a serious concern.
The "Blue Wave of 2018" - is still in effect/per sentiments towards Trump and his enabling GOP. Maybe some of those voters will be "scared" by the propaganda and revert to red/Trump voting. However, those votes are unlikely to outnumber new voters (youngsters coming of age, and millenials who have been of age - but are now being activated to vote.)
