That isn't PC run amok. That is a different perspective. When I was in college I marched to help establish a Chicano Studies program at my university and for my troubles, was pelted by people throwing corn tortillas at the marchers.

You can certainly see instances where people are not able to convey the idea of introspection, and respectful language in an articulate way, or they are too upset to effectively communicate and create a spectacle, but the idea of what people deride as "PC" is the idea that people are complex and the "status quo" way of defining and discussing people from different perspectives has often been demeaning and dismissive.

We even do it here on DU at times and have rightfully been called out, when we refer to people from the South as Rednecks or Hicks, or talk about them derisively. We bash people that we know and respect because we lump people together into a stereotype rather than taking the time to define people based on actions and choices.
