5. Great post on a remarkable American, a favorite. Tubman's

roots were in eastern shore Maryland, around Cambridge in Dorchester County. That area I'm familiar with, small rural farming and fishing communities impacted by tourism that date back to the 1660s. Driving from DC to the Delmarva Coast, we go through the area and I sometimes think of Tubman's life and brave work especially with the underground railroad and also Frederick Douglass who grew up in nearby Talbot County and knew Tubman later in life.

Bucktown Village Store, Dorchester County, Md. The place where Harriet Tubman almost lost her life, one of several dozen sites on the *Harriet Tubman Self Driving Tour* of the historic area.

The Bucktown Village Store is an authentic 19th century country store which operates as a museum featuring authentic African American artifacts related to slavery, various displays, and gifts within a country store setting.

Between 1834-1836 at this location, Harriet Tubman received a blow to her head that fractured her skull while she attempted to assist a fellow enslaved man. This has been called Tubmanís first public act of defiance. As a result of, she experienced lifelong health problems and spiritual visions that changed her views and guided the rest of her life.

Bucktown Village Store offers historic tours and interpretation of this part of Harriet Tubmanís life. They are recognized by the Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. Open by appointment, 401-901-9255.
