The evidence against Avenatti is, however, quite strong.

When you falsify a tax return in order to get a loan, and you get charged with identity theft because you faked the name and signature of a tax preparer, then it’s pretty clear whose testimony and records are going to back that up (and whose testimony and records they already have).

What’s the defense to that? “Yeah, it’s a fake tax return, but this guy actually did put his career on the line by actually signing a falsified tax return so I could get a loan!”?

Yeah, that’ll fly.
