(813 posts)Here in Michigan I don't see a lot of Mormons, despite the fact that it's Romney's birthplace. The ones I have met are reliably Republican but the OP makes a good point nonetheless. It's really stupid the way religion and politics are intertwined in this country, how if you mention your religion or nonreligious affiliation you almost immediately get pigeonholed.
There are atheists and agnostics who are Republicans. There are very devout Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc. that are Democrats.
I am a member of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, which is fairly orthodox theologically. I am also a near-lifelong Democrat. I just cannot square voting Republican with the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth or the Jewish Prophets. Jesus and the Prophets all railed against greed, mistreating the poor and materialism, as did Saint Paul.
The old "judge a book by its cover" is fairly apropos here, I think.
