The purge was to bring voter registration records up to date. If your voter registration didn't match the info on your drivers' license then it got put into a "frozen" file. A lot of people who were frozen in 2016 were still allowed to vote, they just had to re-register and they were good to go.
If your photo ID drivers license says your name is "Robert E. Jones" and you're registered to vote as "Bob Jones" they will not accept the discrepancy any more. That's why those old voter registration records were purged or frozen. It happened to everyone regardless of party affiliation. We have to stop over-reacting to this by claiming that it's a nefarious plot by Republicans. Any name change or address change means you need to re-register, and then you're done.
It's not a big deal.
