Republicans paid for social science research on the impact of yard signs. I can't cite the details though I remember reading about it. I noticed Rick Perry's last couple of campaigns for Texas Governor had very few signs. These days they generally don't use as many unless it's someone with poor name recognition.
Most of them save their money to use in other ways these days.
