They let Mitt Romney pass with just a figleaf release -- one partial and one that could be amended after everyone's attention was elsewhere. This despite his presidential ambitions for over a decade.
That was all the more notable because the accepted form was established by Mitt's own father, Michigan governor George Romney, who released 12 years of returns because he outright said that one or two years could be sanitized, but a dozen would reflect how a candidate actually comported himself.
After Republicans treated Romney's near-nondisclusure as a yawner, the path was clear for Trump to toss it aside entirely.
