I think they have some super serious theological reason why that doesn't work.

I believe the MA colonists were Calvinists. From what I remember from history, in that group if you didn't act totally and completely upright, you proved you were not of the elect, not chosen by god. So you constantly had to care how your actions and demeanor were viewed by other people.

I think people knew if you had been chosen if you were successful in your family, business, financial life. Poor people were clearly NOT chosen by god.

Seems like some of these ideas play a large role in contemporary political views (see GOP!).
