17. Congressional Pay Raises Are Automatic

Until the 1990s Congress had to pass a law each year in order to give itself a pay raise. Some politicians made politics out of it and most politicians dreaded facing the vote, but they wanted the money.
Some genius came up with a new law that each year would automatically give the Congress a raise unless it was voted down.
Since then their salaries have doubled.
