(541 posts)Along with the broader racist angle, maybe Mittens' campaign folks are trying to warm up to American Southerners with the use of the word "heritage". I'm a liberal Democrat/independent, but for those of us whose male ancestors fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War, the Southern Heritage factor still hangs on in the recesses...
Before anyone gets upset about this, I'll mention I have friends from rural New York who're just as proud that their ancestors are from northern New York. (they haven't mentioned ancestors who fought in the Civil War though, and I don't ask)
If the use of the word "heritage" in this context is part of the dog-whistle appeal, it's another FAIL. Many Southerners have Scotch-Irish ancestry (not Mitt's all-hallowed Anglo-Saxon/British) and some of my Southern repub neighbors might not vote for Mitt anyway because he's a Mormon AND a Yankee. He's not "that Obama", though... that's the ONLY thing he's got going for him down here.
