...spent their entire career building his voter base.

They all supported hyper-partisanship, fostering voters who regarded Democrats as vile traitors who had to be neutered -- one Rick Wilson, political consultant, prominent among such fosterers -- until their own particular circle of conservatives lost control of the beast it fed.

They may say things we like to hear nowadays, but they don't get to disown Kremlin Don.
