I believe that, given the way that powerful interests try to trample our rights, an ideal Constitution should enshrine rights as broadly and explicitly as possible. The Bill of Rights is an excellent start, but as implemented today, it fails to go far enough. While many of the Founding Fathers assumed that the Bill of Rights might not even be necessary since all citizens would naturally support freedom, on this issue they were wrong. The Fourteenth Amendment improved matters, yet we still do not enjoy the full fruits of liberty that America promises.
