Former U.S. Rep Beto O'Rourke heads to Austin for voting rights rally

Former U.S. Representative Beto O'Rourke will make his way to Austin for a rally at the Texas State Capitol. It's his last stop before the U.S. Senate votes on the For the People Act, a federal voting rights expansion bill.

"Texas has become the epicenter in the fight for voting rights in America," said Beto O'Rourke.

In a one-on-one interview with CBS Austin, O'Rourke touched on voting rights legislation, border policies, and other legislative priorities.

"We’ve done about as much as we can do in this state and we now need our colleagues, our friends in the U.S. Senate, and President Biden to make this the priority it needs to be," said O'Rourke.

White House to host July 4 'independence from virus' bash

Cue the fireworks. President Joe Biden wants to imbue Independence Day with new meaning this year by encouraging nationwide celebrations to mark the country’s effective return to normalcy after 16 months of coronavirus pandemic disruption.

Even as the U.S. is set to cross the grim milestone of 600,000 deaths from the virus on Tuesday, the White House is expressing growing certainty that July Fourth will serve as a breakthrough moment in the nation’s recovery. That’s even though the U.S. is not expected to quite reach its goal of having 70% of adults vaccinated by the holiday.

As COVID-19 case rates and deaths drop to levels not seen since the first days of the outbreak, travel picks up and schools and businesses reopen, Biden is proclaiming “a summer of freedom” to celebrate Americans resuming their pre-pandemic lives.

The holiday will see the largest event yet of Biden’s presidency: He plans to host first responders, essential workers and military servicemembers and their families on the South Lawn for a cookout and to watch the fireworks over the National Mall. Well more than 1,000 guests are expected, officials said, with final arrangements still to be sorted out.

Meet our fantastic candidate for MO Senate who knows how to set the narrative

We need this kind of spirit in every person we nominate this cycle, one who can define Republicans and their policies right out of the gate before they do it to us.

John Fetterman (PA LT Gov.): On transformative legislation Joe Manchin should step up

Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin is wrong to choose to vote against the For the People Act, a bill that would increase election security and access to voting and reduce the influence of big money in politics. To pretend that former President Donald Trump's Republican Party will act in good faith to preserve democracy is naive.

In an op-ed for the Charleston Gazette, Manchin described the bill as "partisan voting legislation" that "will destroy the already weakening binds of our democracy."

But it's the very thing we need to preserve our democracy -- the antidote to Republican attacks on voting rights.

The January 6th insurrection was just the tip of the anti-democratic iceberg that our country is facing. Our democracy is strained. From partisan gerrymandering and unlimited corporate money flooding our elections to voter suppression legislation, the Republican Party, aligned with Trump, has waged a war on our democracy.

If I were in the Senate now, my "yes" vote on the For the People Act would not be about my party. It would not be about politics. This is about doing what I know is right, guaranteeing that everyone has the right to vote.
