Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Wednesday doubled down on his defense of Justice Clarence Thomas, blasting "clumsy bullying from the political branches" over Thomas's handling of cases related to the 2020 presidential election.

McConnell's comments come after days of criticism in the wake of reports that Ginni Thomas, Clarence Thomas's wife, urged then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows to move aggressively to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

McConnell dismissed calls for Thomas to recuse himself from cases related to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot as an "inappropriate pressure campaign."

"It has no basis in Justice Thomas's decades of impeccable service on the court. The justice and the entire court should feel free to completely ignore all this," McConnell said.

McConnell added that Thomas "is a great American" and an "outstanding justice."

Shanghai is completely shutdown, but I'll fly out of JFK to go to China.

However, China does have history of closing borders, so my wife is telling me to look in other countries as well. I have an offer in Cambodia for a school leadership position, waiting to hear from Hong Kong after my second interview, have an interview in Thailand, and one in Taiwan.

My wife and I will be reunited. The question now is where. Her father pulled a few strings to help. Let's see what happens.

The Kremlin tamped down expectations Monday that face-to-face talks with Ukraine negotiators scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday would result in a deal to end Russia's deadly, destructive invasion.

"Regrettably, we cannot say there have been any significant achievements or breakthroughs so far," Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday. But he said the face-to-face meeting in Turkey could allow for "more focused, tighter and meaningful" talks.

The talks come as the mayor of Mariupol called for evacuation of the remaining 160,000 residents, saying the city is virtually without food, water, power and other supplies.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's latest appeal for a meeting with President Vladimir Putin, saying it would be counterproductive until Ukraine and Russia are close to agreeing on key issues.

Sen. Ted Cruz was photographed checking his Twitter mentions immediately after he aggressively questioned the Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson in a confirmation hearing on Wednesday.

During the hearing, Cruz went over his 20-minute allotted questioning time and repeatedly ignored requests from Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin, the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, to stop grilling Jackson.

He had been asking her about her sentencing record on child-pornography cases, a topic which she repeatedly defended throughout the week.

Shortly after the heated exchange between Durbin and Cruz, Los Angeles Times reporter Nolan D. McCaskill tweeted a photo of the Texas senator in which he appears to be looking down at his phone.

The Russian military has lost more than 10% of the combat force that President Vladimir Putin sent to invade Ukraine, a senior Pentagon official said Tuesday.

The Russian combat force has dipped slightly below 90% for the first time in the war that began less than a month ago, said the official who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe intelligence assessments.

Not all of the more than 150,000 Russian troops in Ukraine are combat troops. Russian forces remain largely stalled across Ukraine, particularly around the capital of Kyiv, where their closest forces remain about 10 miles from the city’s center.

The official described Ukrainian resistance as quick and nimble – and for the first time in the war seeking to retake ground from the Russians.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said Monday that it had summoned the U.S. ambassador to warn that President Joe Biden's recent remarks have put Russian-American relations on the verge of rupture.

Biden last week described Russian President Vladimir Putin as a "war criminal" as Russia's missile attacks on Ukraine cities intensified. The Foreign Ministry, in a social media post, called the statement and other references to Putin and the Russian invasion "unworthy of a statesman of such high rank."

The ministry warned Ambassador John Sullivan that hostile actions taken against Russia would be met with a "decisive and firm rebuff."

The warning came hours after Ukraine firmly rejected a Russian offer to open two safe corridors out of Mariupol in exchange for the city's surrender as the relentless missile strikes on the battered seaport city stretched deeper into a fourth week.

The pounding of the besieged southern port city of Mariupol intensified Sunday and a top U.S. official expressed concern about the prospect of Russian-organized "concentration and prisoner camps" as Russia's bloody assault on Ukraine waded deeper into its fourth week.

The Mariupol city council accused the Russian military of bombing an art school where about 400 people had taken shelter. There was no immediate word on casualties at the art school, but the city council said on social media the building was destroyed and people could remain under the rubble.

A few days earlier, Russian forces bombed a theater in Mariupol where civilians took shelter. Mariupol, a strategic port on the Azov Sea, has been encircled by Russian troops for weeks, cut off from energy, food and water supplies and facing a relentless bombardment.

"Russia continues the genocide of the Ukrainian people and civilians of Mariupol," the post said. "Every war criminal will answer for his crimes against humanity, against the people of Mariupol."
