Mercenary group head known as 'Putin's chef' appears to be recruiting prisoners to fight in Ukraine

Source: NBC via AOL

Short of soldiers and facing battlefield setbacks, Russia appears to be turning to convicted criminals to fight in Ukraine.

A private military company is recruiting prisoners to be sent to the front lines in an effort to bolster Russian President Vladimir Putin’s faltering invasion, according to Western military analysts and a new video that appears to show the group’s recruiting pitch.

Footage emerged this week of what appears to be Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Russian oligarch and the reputed financier of the Wagner mercenaries group. He has previously denied links to the group, whose mercenaries have been fighting in Ukraine and have been deployed by the Kremlin in places such as Syria and Sudan, analysts say.

Machiavelli told leaders never use mercenaries. Putin must be beyond desperate now.

Florida governor defends migrant flights to Martha's Vineyard, suggests more to come

Source: AOL News

MARTHA'S VINEYARD, Mass. (Reuters) - Florida's Republican governor on Friday defended his decision to fly dozens of migrants to the wealthy vacation island of Martha's Vineyard from Texas, and said similar actions could follow as a political dispute over border security deepened in the run-up to U.S. elections in November.

DeSantis claimed credit for a pair of chartered flights on Wednesday that carried around 50 migrants to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, as part of a broader Republican effort to shift responsibility for border crossers to Democratic leaders.

At a news conference in Daytona Beach, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis blamed Democratic President Joe Biden for what he portrayed as a failure to stop migrants from crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, as a record 1.8 million have been arrested this fiscal year.

DeSantis said the Florida Legislature set aside $12 million to transport migrants out of the state and that his government would likely use the funds "to protect Florida."

History lesson from a history teacher:

To convince Jews to leave the ghetto and get on the trains willingly, the Nazis told them they would be going east to better housing, to bring their tools because they would have jobs, and would have plenty to eat while the worked.

It seems Republicans are following the same playbook, only altered a bit.

West Virginia governor signs bill severely limiting abortion access

Source: AOL News

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice (R) signed an abortion ban into law on Friday that will only permit the procedure in cases of rape, incest or medical emergencies.

Justice said in a tweet announcing his signature that the legislation is a “bill that protects life.”

“I said from the beginning that if WV legislators brought me a bill that protected life and included reasonable and logical exceptions I would sign it, and that’s what I did today,” he said.

Both houses of the state’s legislature approved the ban on Tuesday, with the state Senate passing it 22-7 and the state House passing it 77-17. With Justice’s signature, the law goes into effect immediately while its criminal penalties will go into effect in 90 days.

At least there's something about rape, incest, and health. . .but it is still men controlling medical decisions for women.

Keep digging that grave, idiots.

An international educator's view about the live action Little Mermaid in three sentences

I just want to go on record to say I don't care what race a fictional mermaid in a lazy live-action remake of a bastardized Disney version of The Little Mermaid is. Those that do truly care and have their knickers in a twist. . .if I give you a penny, can you please use it to buy a life and clue?

If you Karens and Kevins never read the book, I'll spoil it for you; the mermaid kills herself at the end.

Movie making for a writer is difficult. . .seven years in production hell. . .but

I got three pieces off the ground with funding. Just signed my slate contract and the crew contracts for two of my shorts and my sitcom.

When they are done and out, the producer will put them on IG and market them to others.

I will share them with you all when that happens.

UPDATE on WIFE:

Her Thai visa fell through. I have my Chinese visa, a job at a posh REAL international school in Beijing (with 50% actual foreign students that costs $30K a year to go to for them), my ticket and quarantine hotel in Hong Kong. . .and my plane ticket from Hong Kong back to the Mainland to do my seven day quarantine in Nanjing (20 minutes away from my wife in Jiangsu). October 4th, this COVID/Green card separation madness is FINALLY OVER!!! I will send pictures of our reunion to DU when it happens.

What I find amazing is her Green Card has been denied three times over two years, but my China spouse visa took money and seven days to get.

Gas prices: 'It's not impossible' the national average reaches $2.99 by end of the year, analyst say

Source: Yahoo via AOL

Gas prices have been steadily falling for 13 straight weeks, eclipsing the declining streak the U.S. saw at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to AAA, the average national gas price is $3.71, as of Sept. 13. GasBuddy Head of Petroleum Analysis Patrick De Haan told Yahoo Finance Live that figure could get even lower within the next few months.

"Barring hurricanes or unexpected outages ... the national average could decline to $3.29, then $3.25,” De Haan said (video above). “And it's not impossible that we could be on the road to a $2.99 national average by the end of the year."

Joe Biden, according to Republicans, was solely responsible for the increase of gas prices.

I wonder if Joe Biden, according to Republicans, will be solely responsible for the decrease of gas prices if it happens. I'm not holding my breath waiting for an answer.

Sen. Lindsey Graham's abortion ban proposal roils Republicans, energizes Democrats

Source: Yahoo via AOL

WASHINGTON — With abortion access already expected to be a major issue in November’s midterm elections, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham supercharged the debate over reproductive rights by introducing a bill that would ban most abortions after the 15th week of pregnancy.

“I have chosen to craft legislation that I think is eminently reasonable in the eyes of the world,” the South Carolina senator said. “If we take back the House and the Senate, I can assure you we’ll have a vote,” he vowed, speaking at a Capitol Hill press conference where he was flanked by some of the nation’s most prominent anti-abortion activists, including Marjorie Dannenfelser of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America. Many of those activists would like an outright ban on all abortions.

“This bill, frankly, doesn’t go far enough for many people,” said Penny Young Nance, president of Concerned Women for America. “But it is a consensus piece of legislation.”

The human sucker fish is at is again. Two things:

1: My body, my choice works on COVID vaccines but not on women's health for Republicans.
2: Letting the states decide doesn't work for Republicans actually.

Wisconsin GOP candidate calls for 'pitchforks and torches'

Source: AP

The Republican candidate for governor in Wisconsin endorsed by Donald Trump is calling for people to take up “pitchforks and torches” in reaction to a story that detailed his giving to anti-abortion groups, churches and others — rhetoric that Democrats say amounts to threatening violence.

Tim Michels, who co-owns the state's largest construction company, faces Democratic Gov. Tony Evers in the battleground state. If Michels wins, he will be in position to enact a host of GOP priorities passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature leading into the 2024 presidential election. Evers has vetoed more bills than any governor in modern state history and is campaigning on his ability to serve as a check on Republicans.

Michels, a multimillionaire, this week reacted strongly to a story published by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel detailing charitable giving by he and his wife's foundation, some of which went to anti-abortion groups and churches that have taken anti-gay positions.

Since the story's publication, Michels has gone after not just Evers and Democrats, but also the Journal Sentinel and, more broadly, all reporters.

Online death threats against Biden after speech

Source: Yahoo

President Biden’s fiery speech in Philadelphia denouncing former President Donald Trump and what he described as “extreme MAGA ideology” has sparked online calls for violence, including death threats against the president, according to documents obtained by Yahoo News.

Biden’s remarks also prompted immediate concerns from senior counterterrorism officials who said they fear that calling Trump supporters extremists would be viewed as a call to arms and would only inflame an already volatile threat environment.

“Too much of what’s happening in our country today is not normal,” Biden said Thursday night at Independence Hall, flanked by two U.S. Marines. “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic.”
