About Me

65 years old. Lifelong democrat. Saw JFK in New Haven CT on election eve 1960. I was all of 5 years old. Cast my first vote for Jimmy Carter. Stayed up all night at the English Speaking Union I London to watch the returns. We celebrated the results about 9 AM London time. I cried the morning I learned Bobby Kennedy had been shot. I don't think I ever quite recovered, although President Obama's election helped a lot. These days I'm a moderate democrat and a cultural conservative. I miss the world of good manners, fancy dress and dancing cheek to cheek. Big TCM fan.

The Women lawyers defending Ghislaine Maxwell

Interesting little story in Vanity Fair. I kind of wish I could see the trial now.

Why the mid 1960s was the Golden Age of Pop Music.

From this week's Spectator magazine, telling us what we already know:

The Mayor of Rockefeller Center!

For two decades, Correll Jones has been a fixture as the main greeter at a bustling plaza in Midtown Manhattan. His company-issued business card reflects his status: “C.J. mayor of Rockefeller Center.”

And each winter, as countless visitors arrive to see the Christmas tree outside 30 Rockefeller Plaza, Mr. Jones essentially becomes the tree concierge.

In New York City, where doormen traditionally serve as everything from security guard to confidant, Mr. Jones, 59, holds one of the profession’s most prestigious posts. From now until the tree comes down in early January, he will dispense all of the particulars about it to those who ask: that this year’s version is a 79-foot-tall Norway spruce from Maryland decorated with 50,000 lights and a crystal-laden star that weighs nearly a half-ton.

If they inquire further, he may tell them the tree is almost 90 years old and was cut down “at the end of its life.”

Just a fabulous article today on the man who greets visitors to the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and does so much more to be one of the faces of NYC.
So good it's worth the price of the subscription to read it.

Is Private Equity overrated?

Interesting article on private equity funds in the NYT Dealbook newsletter today (I don't know if it's paywalled). They are difficult to value until they are liquidated after ten years. The internal rate of return is easily manipulated. Are they better investments than stock index funds? Maybe not now, if they ever were.
