About Me

65 years old. Lifelong democrat. Saw JFK in New Haven CT on election eve 1960. I was all of 5 years old. Cast my first vote for Jimmy Carter. Stayed up all night at the English Speaking Union I London to watch the returns. We celebrated the results about 9 AM London time. I cried the morning I learned Bobby Kennedy had been shot. I don't think I ever quite recovered, although President Obama's election helped a lot. These days I'm a moderate democrat and a cultural conservative. I miss the world of good manners, fancy dress and dancing cheek to cheek. Big TCM fan.

Cyber attacks have begun in Ukraine!

Moscow's Compellence Strategy by Rob Lee

A long but thoughtful and highly detailed article written two weeks ago on why Putin is doing what he is doing and what the US might do to deter him:

Traffic Deaths are surging During the Pandemic!

From the New York Times 'The Morning' newsletter:

The United States is enduring its most severe increase in traffic deaths since the 1940s.

It is a sharp change from the recent norm, too. Deaths from vehicle crashes have generally been falling since the late 1960s, thanks to vehicle improvements, lower speed limits and declines in drunken driving, among other factors. By 2019, the annual death rate from crashes was near its lowest level since cars became a mass item in the 1920s.

But then came the Covid-19 pandemic.

Crashes — and deaths — began surging in the summer of 2020, surprising traffic experts who had hoped that relatively empty roads would cause accidents to decline. Instead, an increase in aggressive driving more than made up for the decline in driving. And crashes continued to increase when people returned to the roads, later in the pandemic.

Per capita vehicle deaths rose 17.5 percent from the summer of 2019 to last summer, according to a Times analysis of federal data. It is the largest two-year increase since just after World War II.

TASS reporting Russian troops to return to garrisons.

This article was published within the hour. I believe the Western District is the one that borders Ukraine. Let's hope!

MOSCOW, February 15. /TASS/. Russian troops will return to their garrisons upon the completion of drills and units of Russia’s Southern and Western Military Districts have begun loading their equipment for their departure, Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said in a statement on Tuesday.

"As combat training measures are coming to a close, the troops, as is always the case, will conduct combined marches to their permanent garrisons. Units of the Southern and Western Military Districts that have accomplished their tasks have already begun loading personnel and equipment on railway and auto transport means and will today begin heading to their military garrisons," the statement says.

Some units will conduct foot marches as part of military columns, according to the statement.

It was earlier reported that troops of almost all of Russia’s Military Districts were participating in massive drills.

CNN: Putin willing to negotiate!

Murdaugh murder site property listed for sale.

Even the real estate has a crazy history. Purchased a decade ago from a drug dealer, deeded to the late wife whose estate Alex Murdaugh is the sole beneficiary, mortgaged to a bank whose ex-CEO is about to be indicted for participating in Murdaugh's fraud schemes.
And you're too late. It already has a buyer.

WSJ: US embassy is evacuating Kiev

CBS News: Russian army units have moved into attack positions.

Russia has moved some long-range artillery and rocket launchers into firing position, threatening Ukraine, according to a U.S. official.

Some Russian units have left their assembly areas — the bumper-to-bumper formations seen in satellite photos — and are beginning to move into "attack positions," according to the official. This movement marks a change since Sunday, when some of the units had left the assembly areas but had not yet taken what could be viewed as attack positions.

The U.S. believes Russia will attack Ukraine by the end of the week, although it's not yet certain what form it will take, the official said.
