Florissant officer gets probation for striking man with police SUV

https://www.ksdk.com/article/news/investigations/florissant-officer-joshua-smith-probation-for-striking-pedestrian/63-1126a599-76a1-4fdd-a3da-5ccc555fe394

In plea deal the victim agreed to, Joshua Smith will get two years of probation for striking a man who was running from police with his SUV.

When St. Charles County Prosecutor Tim Lohmar saw videos of an officer striking a man running from the police with his police SUV, he vowed to seek justice and threw multiple charges at him.

Now, more than two years later, that former officer is walking away with two years of probation following a plea deal for misdemeanor assault.

Lohmar said that’s what the victim wanted.

“It was going to be a close call with the evidence as to how things may play out in the trial,” Lohmar said. “But ultimately, the victim in this case, through his attorney, was very adamant that we resolve this case without a trial.”

A Sheriff in Louisiana Has Been Destroying Records of Deputies' Alleged Misconduct for Years

https://www.propublica.org/article/jefferson-parish-sheriff-misconduct-records-allegations-jpso

A lawsuit brought by the family of an autistic teen who died while in custody found the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office destroyed the disciplinary records of a deputy involved in the case.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana has been unlawfully destroying its deputies’ disciplinary records for at least 10 years, according to records provided by state officials responsible for overseeing the retention of records by state, parish and local agencies.

The finding comes at a time when the sheriff’s office is facing multiple lawsuits involving allegations of excessive force, racial discrimination and wrongful death at the hands of Jefferson Parish deputies. Attorneys have accused Sheriff Joe Lopinto of failing to discipline deputies and a lack of transparency when it comes to releasing records that might shed light on their history of complaints and disciplinary action.

Cop's Checkered Past May Cost SF Taxpayers Another $2M

https://sfstandard.com/criminal-justice/cops-checkered-past-may-cost-sf-taxpayers-another-2m/

San Francisco is about to pay nearly $2 million to settle claims that two officers with histories of misconduct lied to justify shooting a man during an exchange of gunfire in the Outer Sunset.

The settlement, which is awaiting approval from the Board of Supervisors, isn’t the first big payout spurred by troubled former San Francisco police officer Paulo Morgado.

Morgado cost taxpayers $50,000 in 2010 when the city settled a lawsuit alleging he shoved a Black Army veteran, called him “boy” and misrepresented the encounter in a police report.

After he was fired over the incident, Morgado won a lawsuit that forced San Francisco to temporarily rehire him and pay him more than $500,000 in lost income over a procedural issue with his termination.

'Inexcusable Behavior': Waterbury Police Officer Fired After Interaction With Driver

https://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/local/waterbury-police-officer-fired-for-conduct-with-citizen-while-directing-traffic/2951598/

A Waterbury police officer has been fired after an Internal Affairs investigation into his conduct during an encounter with a citizen while directing traffic last month.

Investigators said Officer James Hinkle was directing traffic at the intersection of Thomaston Avenue and Homer Street on December 13 around 12 p.m. after a mechanical failure with the traffic light.

The traffic lights were in flashing mode as Hinkle directed traffic.

According to police, while directing traffic, a vehicle drove through the intersection. Hinkle told the vehicle to stop, hit the driver's side of the vehicle with his hand and then the vehicle pulled over.
