The Mississippi Supreme Court says it will not remove NFL Hall of Famer Brett Favre as a defendant in a civil lawsuit that seeks to recover millions of dollars of misspent welfare money meant to help some of the poorest people in the United States.
A panel of three justices issued a brief ruling Wednesday, denying an appeal from Favre.
His attorneys said in written arguments in May that the Mississippi Department of Human Services is making utterly meritless legal arguments in suing the retired quarterback.
On April 24, Hinds County Circuit Judge Faye Peterson denied Favres request to be removed from the lawsuit, which has more than three dozen people or businesses as defendants. Favre asked the Supreme Court to overturn Petersons decision.

While working at a Michigan meat processing plant, a teenage boy felt his hand get pulled into a meat grinder. The accident, which happened about a week before Thanksgiving in 2019, cost the boy his right hand. Now, over three years later, the owner of the meat processing company has pleaded guilty to illegally employing the boy, who officials say was 17 at the time.
As a result, the owner will pay costs and fines amounting to $1,143, according to an Aug. 8 news release from the Michigan attorney general.

The mother of a 30-year-old Michigan man who's accused of making death threats against Democratic politicians is now charged with lying when she purchased firearms later found in her son's possession.
Threats against public officials have become increasingly common in Michigan in recent years. A plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was broken up by the FBI in 2020, and prosecutors have so far secured nine convictions in the case in state and federal courts.
The charges unsealed Tuesday against Michelle Berka, 56, come after her son Randall Berka II was arrested in March and charged with illegally possessing guns. Federal prosecutors say he made death threats on social media against the president and governor, as well as people in the LGBTQ community.
Authorities say Michelle Berka knowingly lied when she bought five guns that were eventually given to another person, according to an indictment unsealed in federal court Tuesday and first reported by The Detroit News. While the indictment dated Aug. 2 does not name who Berka gave the firearms to, her son was arrested with four of the same firearms in March.

Five people affiliated with white nationalist hate group Patriot Front are suing a Seattle-area man who they say infiltrated the group and disclosed their identities online, leading them to lose their jobs and face harassment, according to The Seattle Times.
What theyre really upset about is suffering the consequences of their abhorrent views views that they feel so strongly about, they dont want anyone to know. The suit accuses David Alan Capito, 37, also known as Vyacheslav Arkhangelskiy, of using a false name in late July 2021 to convince Patriot Front to accept him as a member.
Once inside the group, Capito took pictures at its get-togethers in the Pacific Northwest, surreptitiously recorded members license plates and used hidden microphones to record conversations, according to the lawsuit.
The suit also accuses Capito of using another group to hack into online chat rooms, further exposing members appalling views. We dont condone doxxing, or searching for and publishing private or identifying information about an individual on the internet, typically with malicious intent.
We are not weighing in on whether this lawsuit has merit and we certainly dont condone breaking the law, which might be whats found to have happened here, as the members claim.

A veteran FBI counterintelligence agent says his supervisor told him to stop investigating Rudy Giuliani and to cut off contact with any sources who reported on corruption by associates of former President Donald Trump, according to a whistleblower complaint obtained by Insider.
The agent, who served 14 years as a special agent for the bureau, including a long stint in Russia-focussed counter-intelligence, claims in a 22-page statement that his bosses interfered with his work in "a highly suspicious suppression of investigations and intelligence-gathering" aimed at protecting "certain politically active figures and possibly also FBI agents" who were connected to Russian and Ukrainian oligarchs.
Those figures, the statement claims, explicitly included "anyone in the [Trump] White House and any former or current associates of President Trump."

Sixto Rodriguez, who lived in obscurity as his music career flamed out early in the U.S. only to find success in South Africa and a stardom he was unaware of, died Tuesday in Detroit. He was 81.
Rodriguez's legacy would take off back home after the singer and songwriter became the subject of the Oscar-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man.
His death was announced on the Sugarman.org website and confirmed Wednesday by his granddaughter, Amanda Kennedy.
He died following a short illness, according to his wife, Konny Rodriguez, 72.
A 2013 Associated Press story referred to Rodriguez as the greatest protest singer and songwriter that most people never heard of.
His albums flopped in the United States in the 1970s, but unknown to him he later became a star in South Africa where his songs protesting the Vietnam War, racial inequality, abuse of women and social mores inspired white liberals horrified by the country's brutal racial segregation system of apartheid.
