An Oregon man is on the mend after police say he accidentally shot himself in the groin while flaunting a concealed handgun at a Lincoln City supermarket.
The mishap occurred Sunday night when Nicholas J. Ellingford, 29, brandished his Glock 9mm in the checkout line at McKay’s Market on U.S. 101 and tried to show it off to a buddy, according to the Lincoln City Police Department.
Ellingford mistakenly pulled the trigger as he stuffed the piece back into his pants, police said. A bullet tore through the gunslinger’s groin and exited his thigh, just barely missing the man’s femoral artery.
The gruesome wound required Ellingford to be airlifted to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, said police, which added that he did not have a concealed handgun license and could face criminal charges for his reckless behavior.

Have you considered buying guns in anticipation of violence from Trump supporters after his defeat?
A rather free wheeling discussion on this was locked in GD, with the statement that it belongs in this group.
Just for the record, while I'm already quite well armed, I see no reason for someone who otherwise has no interest in owning firearms to do for fear of roving gangs of disconsolate Trump supporters going on murder sprees after he loses the election, as the OP of the original thread clearly does.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials now allege Dijon Kizzee picked up a pistol before deputies chasing him over a bicycle violation fired 19 shots, killing him.
The Sheriff’s Department gave an update Thursday on its investigation into the Aug. 31 shooting, the first update on how it unfolded since homicide investigators interviewed the deputies involved in the case.
Previously, officials had said the 29-year-old Black man “made a motion” toward a gun that dropped from a jacket as he fell to the ground.
The deadly shooting has sparked a wave of protests, largely outside the sheriff’s station in South L.A., at which demonstrators say they’ve been met with harsh tactics from deputies. The tension boiled over last weekend when two deputies were wounded in an ambush shooting in Compton, and the Sheriff’s Department later arrested a journalist reporting on a small protest outside the hospital where they were being treated.

It’s a dry January, which means two things on this girls’ trip to central Arizona: we’re all skipping the margaritas tonight, and the river will be low enough for our Tacoma to cross in the morning.
Crowded into a booth at a Mexican restaurant in a small town near the edge of Tonto National Forest, swapping names and where-are-you-froms, we are a motley crew: two millennials wearing camouflage and eyelash extensions, an overalls-clad photographer who lives in an Airstream, and me, a San Francisco food writer soon to be out of her comfort zone.
Our server, Penny, flower pen poised over her notepad, is confused. “I have to ask,” she says, inspecting us through rhinestone-studded spectacles. “What are you ladies doing here?”
Rihana Cary, 33, and Amanda Caldwell, 32, friends who met on Instagram, look at each other. They’re used to this question.

Forget the flute of chilled Moet & Chandon before takeoff, mid-flight gin and tonics and a roaming dessert trolley after dinner. Flying business class isn’t what it used to be.
Efforts to minimize human interaction and reduce the risk of infection are taking the shine off the most expensive seats onboard commercial aircraft. Gone are the multi-course banquets and warm personal service, once the hallmarks of carriers like Singapore Airlines Ltd. and Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. These days, what’s left of premium-grade travel is functional, hygienic and closer to cattle class -- only with more legroom.
The limitations are one more headache for an industry grappling with a near-total collapse in demand and follow years of luxury oneupmanship among carriers in a contest for the most profitable passengers.
Suddenly, it’s harder to tell airlines apart when you’re up the pointy end. That’s making it tougher to win top-paying customers, and risks pushing some to the back of the plane.

Two Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies are fighting for their lives after they were shot multiple times at point-blank range in an ambush, authorities said.
Crowds of protesters blocked the entrance to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, where the wounded officers were in a critical condition, police said. Some protesters chanted "we hope they die," the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office said on Twitter. A witness told ABC7 that some had tried to break into the hospital's emergency room.
The shooting happened at around 7 p.m. Saturday at the Metro Blue Line station at Willowbrook Avenue and Compton Boulevard, not far from the Compton sheriff's station.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's department shared video of the incident in a post on Twitter that shows a person open fire through the passenger-side window of the patrol car in Compton.

A Colorado Springs school sent police to the home of a 12-year-old because he was seen playing with a toy gun during an online class.
Danielle Elliott, whose son, Isaiah, pointed the toy gun at a computer screen and pulled the trigger during his virtual art class, said she received a call on Aug. 27 from the school saying that a police officer was on the way to her home.
“I never thought: ‘You can’t play with a Nerf gun in your own home because somebody may perceive it as a threat and call the police on you,’” Elliott said.
The incident happened on the third day of distance learning at Grand Mountain School. Elliott said her son’s art teacher emailed her, saying she had notified the vice principal that her son was distracted and playing with a gun. The teacher said she believed the gun was fake.

The case of a retired French couple who sold their house to settle into a Riviera villa only to find that it was occupied by a family, leaving them “homeless”, has triggered public outrage and calls to change the country’s squatting laws.
Henri and Marie-Thérèse Kaloustian, both 75, were looking forward to a peaceful retirement by the sea after selling their home in Lyon, southeastern France.
Their intention was to decamp to the holiday home, a pink villa they have owned for the past 36 years in the picturesque village of Théooule-sur-Mer.
But when they arrived late August, they were shocked to discover that an unknown couple with two small children had “moved in” and refused to budge.

Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, which is currently the only Russian aircraft carrier in service, contrary to the intended repair, "broke" even more in a year. Judging by satellite images published by the Chinese publication Sohu, there has been no repairs done on the warship yet. However, in one a year, its deck has rusted significantly so that it became noticeable even from outer space.
Satellite images show that there is no real progress in repairing the admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, but part of the deck closer to the stern has rusted significantly in less than a year.
"We were surprised to see how quickly the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov rusted. This repair of the Russian ship seems to have ended with a serious corrosion of the upper deck. If this continues, the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov may very soon just disappear," Sohu reports, noting that now it is easier to write off the aircraft carrier than to continue its repair.
Earlier, the Russian news agency TASS reported, that Zvezdochka shipyard, where the ship is being repaired, opened a tender for the painting of the aircraft carrier’s external surface which is expected to be completed by September 1, 2022. More than 250 million rubles ($3.4 million) will be allocated for this work. The bidding closed on May 20. According to the shipyard’s press service, the ship is expected to re-join the Russian Navy in 2022.

Over a century ago, as trench warfare imposed a seemingly perpetual blood-soaked stalemate in World War I, a commission in the United Kingdom made military history. It adapted technology from ‘Creeping Grip” treaded tractors imported from Chicago into armored war machines that could negotiate mud-soaked battlefields and trenches, seemingly impervious to bullets and shrapnel, and blast enemies with their own sponson-mounted cannons and machine guns.
These breakdown-prone, rhombus-shaped “land ships” are considered to be the world’s first tanks.
Today, the UK may make history again as an integrated review of defense and foreign policy mulls retiring the British Army’s fleet of Challenger 2 main battle tanks in favor of more funding for satellites and cyber-warfare. That could make the UK potentially the first major military power to give up on the main battle tank entirely.
The fate of the British Army’s armored fighting vehicles is linked to fundamental questions as to what role the UK should play in NATO and future military coalitions.
