'Senseless act of violence': Judge finds 13-year-old guilty of killing taco truck owner

https://www.modbee.com/news/local/article260413577.html

A Modesto boy has been found guilty of walking up to an airport neighborhood taco truck and fatally shooting the owner in the face a year ago.

Judge Rubén Villalobos made the ruling Thursday that the juvenile killed 67-year-old Rafael Avila-Rodriguez, who was inside his taco truck next to the Airport Market on the evening of Feb. 16, 2021. He also found true that the minor, who was just 13 at the time, acted intentionally and with premeditation and personally discharged a firearm. The defendant looked straight ahead and showed little emotion as the judge read the ruling.

Villalobos said that cumulatively, much of the circumstantial evidence presented by the prosecution proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the minor was the shooter.

That included video of the shooting, video that showed the juvenile defendant at a different market in the airport neighborhood four hours before the shooting, the clothing he was wearing, cell phone records of his activity in the area, and a photo of him holding a gun three days before the shooting.

https://abc13.com/deadly-home-invasion-southeast-houston-cooperstown-near-barbizon-man-shot-and-killed/11740436/

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A man who pretended to be a health care worker was shot to death after he forced his way into a home in southeast Houston, police say.

Officers in the Clear Lake area were called to a home invasion in the 12500 block of Cooperstown near Barbizon Drive at about 11:37 p.m. Monday.

According to police at the scene, the intruder tried to trick the homeowner by telling her that he was a worker with home health care.

The homeowner didn't let the stranger inside, instead calling her son who lives down the street.

By that time, the intruder broke down the door and got into the home. When the son arrived, he shot and killed the intruder, police say.

Kemp signs bill allowing people to carry handguns without a license in Georgia into law

https://www.fox5atlanta.com/news/kemp-constitutional-carry-bill-allowing-handguns-without-license-georgia

ATLANTA - Gov. Brian Kemp signed a bill allowing Georgia residents to carry handguns in public without a license or background check into law Tuesday.

The Georgia Senate passed the legislation on at the beginning of April, sending it to the governor’s desk for signature.

Kemp said the bill is a public safety measure.

"SB 319 makes sure that law-abiding Georgians — law-abiding Georgians, including out daughters and your family too — can protect themselves without having the permission of the state government. The constitution of the United States gives us that right, not the government," Kemp said Tuesday. "HB 218 ensures that individuals who are licensed to carry in another state are also authorized to do so here in Georgia."

Sacramento Police Describe Weekend Shooting as a Gang Firefight

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/06/us/sacramento-shooting-suspects.html

SACRAMENTO — The Sacramento Police Department said on Wednesday that “gang violence” was at the center of the shooting that killed six people and wounded 12 over the weekend and that at least five gunmen were involved.

“While we cannot at this time elaborate on the precise gang affiliation of individuals involved, gangs and gang violence are inseparable from the events that drove these shootings,” the department said in a statement.

The shooting, one of the deadliest in the city’s history, occurred outside nightclubs in downtown Sacramento early Sunday morning. Among the dead were a supermarket clerk and a homeless woman.

The police said on Wednesday that the shooting involved at least “two groups of men,” but the notion of gang violence has changed significantly in the decades since the Crips and the Bloods gained notoriety in California.

https://www.bbc.com/news/business-61010605.amp

Up to eight more nuclear reactors could be approved on existing sites as part of the UK's new energy strategy.

The plan, which aims to boost UK energy independence and tackle rising prices, also includes plans to increase wind, hydrogen and solar production.

But experts have called for a bigger focus on energy efficiency and improving home insulation.

Consumers are facing soaring energy bills after the Russian invasion of Ukraine pushed gas prices even higher.

Surveillance video obtained earlier this week shows the woman struggling to keep the front door of her building closed, but the attackers were able to force their way in.

Ukrainian zoo considers euthanizing big animals like lions and tigers after Russian shelling destroy

destroys enclosures.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/ukrainian-zoo-considers-euthanizing-lions-tigers-russian-shelling-destroys-enclosures/

A zoo in Kharviv, Ukraine says it may have to euthanize some animals after Russian shelling destroyed enclosures. Feldman Ecopark is trying to relocate animals, but if that option fails, some animals, like lions and tigers, will have to be put to sleep.

"Feldman Ecopark doesn't exist anymore," the zoo's founder Alexander Feldman said in a video statement. The zoo was subjected to a bombardment that basically destroyed it, he said in the video, which was posted on Facebook.

Animal enclosures were badly damaged, and Feldman warned some animals could enter the streets. While the bears were in bad condition "by sheer miracle, tigers and lions are alive," he said.

"Today we are deciding ... we have time 'till evening, whether to put them all down or transport them somewhere else," Feldman said. The zoo's team was working in Chutovo, trying to find a way to save the animals, he said. "Maybe we will save baby jaguars, baby panthers, but all adult animals will probably be liquidated," Feldman said.

In the caption of the video, the zoo said its specialists were considering the possibility of equipping some animals with temporary housing in Chutovo, in the Poltava region of Ukraine. "Failing that, the only option left to us is to put the predators to sleep. It is unimaginably painful to talk about this, but the main priority now is the lives of people," the caption reads.
