'As much as it pains me to say it (my personal urge toward salvationism is as strong as anybody else’s), nobody is coming to save us....Salvationists take that as a statement of resignation, of surrender to crises bigger than we are. I take it as both a challenge and an opportunity. By abandoning reliance on others for our salvation from climate change, income inequality, political corruption, and all the other ills of our modern society, we can then shift responsibility for our future to the people most capable of doing something about these problems: ourselves and the governments we can influence.
Joe Biden is not going to save us, and neither are Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren. Without entire movements of people like you and me behind them, politicians are relatively impotent: we are the ones who have to save our nation and the world.
Don’t despair. Moments of crisis are also moments when the possibility of transformation is at its greatest.'

'I’m not here to write about the shit-show in the Middle East. that’s above my pay grade — if people much smarter than I haven’t been able to solve it, I’m sure as hell not going to be able to do it in a post...
first the truth, then the lie. in August, the US and Iran made a deal: Iran would free five Americans and in return, the US would un-freeze $6 billion in Iranian oil revenue.
now, here are some important bullet points: the $6 billion is not US taxpayer money — it comes from the sale of Iranian oil to South Korea, money that had been frozen due to sanctions. Iran has not yet received one penny of that six billion. it’s sitting a bank in Qatar.
now here’s the Republican lie: “Joe Biden gave 6 billion taxpayer dollars to Iran and they gave it to Hamas and Hamas used it to attack Israel and it’s all Joe Biden’s fault.”

'Rebellious Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) only needs to get four other Republicans to join him in his quest to oust McCarthy if all Democrats vote in favor of the motion, which means that McCarthy will likely need some Democrats to cross over in order to keep his job.
However, NBC News' Sahil Kapur reports that Democrats aren't feeling any urgency to save McCarthy, and one Democratic aide tells him that they won't be "a cheap date" when it comes time to get McCarthy off the hook.
Democrats are saying that it's up to McCarthy to reach out to them before they decided on how they'll vote on the upcoming motion to vacate the chair.'

Cynicism helped transform Kevin McCarthy from an “amiable dunce,” who functioned as the House Republican Conference’s rush chairman. He is an indefatigable fundraiser, who loves the pursuit of power and the details of the game. He is completely disinterested in policy, global events, history or anything substantive that matters. He is a gadfly who did the chores that no one else wanted to do, and so he was made the leader because, in the end, he is the House Republican concierge. It’s how the members see him. He makes their lives easier, and so up he went. He went up and up and up until he became a legitimately dangerous menace to the US constitution and the American republic.
Democrats should sit back and do nothing. No doubt soon the airwaves will be filled with commentators talking about the necessity of maintaining McCarthy as speaker to somehow protect America from the MAGA nuts who want to take his office sign down. It’s a false choice. The only choice that really matters is the one that the American people get in 2024. The decision will be simple. Do the American people want to maintain a majority of epic dysfunction made up of some of the most dysfunctional people in a nation of 330 million people?...Kevin McCarthy is drowning.
