The Head scratching road to the U.S. Presidency using the Electoral College.

https://graphics.reuters.com/USA-ELECTION/ELECTORAL-COLLEGE/qzjpqaeqapx/

This Reuters article was published in 2020, and explains how the Electoral College works. The process is so rife with loopholes, you can clearly see how Trump & Co. thought they could use the electoral college for the nefarious purpose of stealing the election. All they needed was for the Vice President to go along with the plan.

Time to get rid of this archaic relic.

Heather Cox Richardson from Letters from an American

After more than a year of insisting he just wanted to address the problem of voter fraud, which he falsely claimed had stolen the election from him, Trump just came right out and said he wanted to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Former U.S. attorney and legal commentator Joyce White Vance wrote: “This is what prosecutors call guilty knowledge. And also, intent.” CNN’s Jim Acosta was more succinct: he tweeted, “Coup coup for Cocoa Puffs.”

Another brilliant letter from Heather Cox Richardson

Letters from an American

I’ve thought a lot lately about Representative Lauren Boebert’s (R-CO) tweet on January 6, 2021, saying, “Today is 1776.”

The insurrectionists’ cries of 1776 remind me not of the Founding era, but of 1860. In that time, too, people believed they were creating a new country and recorded their participation. In that time, too, the rebels wanted a country with a weak federal government, so they could be sure people like them would rule forever.

Remember Their Names - July 4, 2018: Seven GOP lawmakers travel to Russia

Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala), Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), and Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas).

There was no reason for the delegation to be partisan, but it was. There was no reason for these Republicans to give the Kremlin a pass on its misdeeds, but they did. There was no reason for the GOP lawmakers to downplay the significance of election meddling and the fate of Crimea in their discussions, but based on multiple accounts, they did that, too*.

Republican members of Congress sounded a newly conciliatory tone in meetings with Russian lawmakers and officials here on Tuesday in a rare visit to Moscow and a preview of the looming summit between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) told Russia's foreign minister that while Russia and the United States were competitors, "we don't necessarily need to be adversaries." ... "I'm not here today to accuse Russia of this or that or so forth," Shelby told Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin.

AND WE STILL HAVE NO ANSWERS.

Biden's economic policy in plain English

https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/january-27-2022

Heather Cox Richardson: Letters from an American:

...the U.S. economy grew by an astonishing 6.9 percent annual rate from October to December 2021. ...Despite the ongoing pandemic, this is the fastest full-year growth since 1984. ....At the same time, the U.S. added 6 million jobs in 2021, pegging the unemployment rate below 4%.

Secretary Janet Yellen explained to the World Economic Forum that the Biden administration rejected Republican supply-side economics, ushered in during the Reagan administration. ...we aren’t just focused on achieving a high topline growth number that is unsustainable—we are instead aiming for growth that is inclusive and green.”

A Nazi officer's housekeeper hid 12 Jews in the basement. Reads like a novel

https://www.nbcnews.com/investigations/hero-holocaust-polish-housekeeper-saved-12-jews-rcna12833

A Nazi officer’s housekeeper hid 12 Jews in the basement. All of them made it out alive.

Roman Haller owes his life to a 20-year-old housekeeper.

He was conceived in the basement of a home in Poland where his parents and 10 other Jews hid out during World War II. It wasn’t just any house. It belonged to a Nazi officer, and it was his housekeeper who smuggled the Jews to the basement and took care of them in secret.

When the Nazi officer discovered the Jews in his basement sometime later, Gut made a harrowing bargain: She agreed to become his mistress in exchange for his silence.

Lot of U.S. news about Boris Johnson and his Covid Parties...

Who the hell cares. Fire the the jerk and get on with it. The U.S. has much more to worry about than Johnson's parties, like insurrection, sedition, and treason. Just my rant for the day.

Heather Cox Richardson: Ukraine, Here's the story of how we got here:

https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/january-24-2022

A Must Read: Here are some excerpts:

Putin wanted to get the sanctions lifted. At the same time, with Yanukovych out of power, Manafort was out of a job and in debt to his former friends. In summer 2016, Manafort began to manage the presidential campaign of Republican candidate Donald Trump.

Under Trump, American policy swung Putin’s way as Trump attacked NATO and the European Union, weakened our ties to our traditional European allies, and threatened to withdraw our support for Ukraine.

That policy changed when Biden took office. His administration renewed support for Ukraine and its move toward stronger ties to NATO and the European Union. At the same time, it has dramatically cracked down on money laundering, shell companies, and the movement of illicit money.
